A well-sewn hem is the key to a polished garment, and in this workshop, you’ll learn a variety of hemming techniques suitable for different fabrics and styles. Working on fabric samples, we’ll explore essential hem finishes, from simple folded hems to more advanced techniques used in garment construction.
We’ll start with foundational methods like double and single fold hems before moving on to more specialized finishes, including the slip stitch hem for an invisible look, baby hems for delicate fabrics, and twin needle hems for knitwear. You’ll also learn how to use bias tape and faced hems for structured, decorative finishes. Along the way, we’ll cover tips for achieving even stitching, handling tricky fabrics, and choosing the right hem for your project.
Workshop: Seam Finishes, Gathering & Ruffles
A beautifully finished seam not only strengthens your garment but also enhances its durability and appearance. In this workshop, you’ll learn a range of seam finishing techniques to give your projects a clean and professional look. We’ll cover essential finishes like the zigzag stitch for preventing fraying, French seams for delicate fabrics, and flat-felled seams for extra durability. You’ll also explore the mock flat-felled seam, a great alternative for achieving a similar look with less effort.
In addition to seam finishes, we’ll dive into gathering and ruffles, adding fun and decorative elements to your sewing. You’ll practice basic gathering techniques using basting stitches and experiment with creating ruffles. Whether you’re sewing garments or home décor, these techniques will give your projects an elevated touch.
